Yesterday, while cleaning around the house, I was listening to the radio, 92.5 Jack FM as always. It was Jeff and Carly show along with all sorts of great rock tunes, when — as usual — the 3 o’clock news came on, traffic. Then, all of a sudden, as if out of nowhere, this monster comes on: some hip-hop music about ladies and all the rest.
I thought I accidentally switched to a different channel. I was wrong. It was 92.5 exactly.
My next thought was that Jeff and Carly decided to make a cruel joke. But after that song was finally through, another similar piece of overly exaggerated art immediately came on. My ears were bleeding heavily by then.
After a moment of confusion and puzzlement, my next thought was that supporters of Q107 decided to hack Jack FM and pull a trick of inserting noise into the radio band. And when I say `noise’, I really do consider (predominantely most) hip-hop songs simply noise. But after yet another few songs were emitted by my speakers, I figured that, if it was true, someone would already do something by now. [Note: I have nothing to do with hatred among Jack FM and Q107; I personally thing it is quite dumb, the whole thing; moreover, I enjoy both radio stations very much a lot.]
It seamed like a tiny bug slowly crawled through my ears into my brain, bit off a bunch of stuff on its way, laid a whole bunch of dynamite and it let it go off. It is certainly a traumatic experience.
Anyhow, later I have discovered the following note in many places around the net:
At 3pm on June 5, 2009 Rogers Communications announced that effective immediately Jack FM would be re-branded (back) to KISS 92.5. The new format is Top 40, and as a promotion the station will play 10,000 songs uninterrupted by commercials to pique interest and build listenership. The main reason of the change was because of the low ratings JACK-FM was getting in the Greater Toronto Area market.

This is sad. This is more than just sad. This is beyond sad. This is preposterous!
Jack FM Toronto was my favourite radio station. I occasionally listen to Q107 and 102.5 The Edge, but Jack was always there, certainly. I was away in Edmonton until a few days ago, and guess what: I used Jack FM Listen Live every morning and every day. It was something I used to wake up to.
And now it’s gone! Like a doubly nilpotent matrix that was accidentally squared.
I am now looking at various other Jack FM stations, for example that in Vancouver and that in Chicago. I guess my radio is now located far away from where I live.
Sad…
Update [June 9, 2009, 16:00]: In the comments below, Charlene has kindly provided a link to an online petition to bring Jack back:

I agree. Jack was a great station, and it was replaced with a lame version of z103. It seems that this great media company is trying to target the radio station to their cell-phone buying target group of trendy teenagers. No more 92.5 preset on my dial!

I understand the way you are feeling, but Jack FM .. an oldies format will not work, also with 1050 chum, that is why the formats are changed.
I’m GLAD JACK FM IS GONE, you know why? They booted Kiss FM out utilizing a very harsh method. Back then when they came to took over, rogers got all the KISS employees to go out for a meeting at some restaurant. During that time JACK FM moved in, changed the format, and took all their things out from their lockers, cleared their desks so that when KISS employees return, they could say, “get out, station is now ours”. And immediately everyone got fired.
So IT SERVES THEM RIGHT, TO GET BIT BACK IN THEIR ASS RIGHT NOW. JACK BECOMES KISS FM.. once again KISS remains.
1050 chum on the other hand, was different.. there was a whole legacy behind the station and certainly I don’t think 1050 chum was looking to make money, just to hold some history for chum and keep the good things behind. 104.5 chum fm was making the money, this was supporting 1050 i believe. And you know what, thats fine for chum. The ctv bastards then fired all the great people at chum 1050, and rolled in cp24.. a legacy gone, just like that. .
I will remind you, JACK FM deserves it

I think its rather sad that they would replace Jack Fm with a failed and I mean FAILED radio brand. Kiss couldn’t make it as country and they couldnt make it as dance and they wont make it as top 40 or whatever the hell they are playing now. I loved Jack I liked the variety. I dont want to always listen to oldies and I dont always want to listen to the latest and greatest (I use that term lightly). I to will be listening to Radio from another area because frankly Toronto radio sucks…

Here, this is pretty close to what we used to have here in Toronto:
http://www.jackfm.com/listen/
Although sometimes it seems that their repertoire is just a slight bit limited, but I’m sure that’s not true.

I can’t believe it. I thought that there was something wrong with the radio in my car, I kept searching thinking that there was mixed singles on the airways. I am truly sadened, and angry. I had found the perfect station and it was on all the time, now i can’t find a dam thing worth listening too on the radio. I spend alot of time in my car and this makes my drive really long. I WANT JACK BACK@!!!!!

Me too… my sister turned on 92.5 on her Ipod radio dock on Friday and some random hip-hop song started to play. I said to my sister, are you sure this is Jack FM? It clearly sounds like Z103.5 so I looked at the display and sure enough, it was 92.5. I was confused and was sure that maybe the signals were mixed up. Sometimes, the frequency gets mixed up and stations from other cities start to play. I thought, “This must be it!” Then, I looked it up on the Internet and found this out. I am more of an 102.1 The Edge listener, but I am still sad at this news as I do listen to Jack FM from time to time. However, if The Edge disappears anytime soon, I will.. I don’t even know what I’d do.

I am also pissed about losing JACK. No real rock station remaining in Toronto… Pathetic!
I urge everyone to sign up with the new Kiss FM, answer there stupid survey, and voice your opnion in every place it asks for “comments”.. i just did.. made me feel better telling them what i think!!!

I too want Jack back. I don’t buy the low ratings because I know a LOT of people who were faithful Jack listeners. It was all handled poorly as apparently it was when it turned to Jack. I just don’t think we need another teenage radio station.
Monday, June 8, 2009 at 14:46 |
Karen,
I am just wondering how they perform the ratings measurements. It is obvious that most people listen to Jack while driving a car, especially because the age group is mostly 20+ who work and get to work by car. I have no idea how it is possible to measure the number of listeners, if most use simple radio receivers.
Or is there a way?

in our world of big brother….i would not be surprised

Yeah, Toronto radio is getting really depressing – and it was one of the best markets in North America. The original JACK-FM format was really cool – a genuine mix – then they tried to outrock Q107, which was a mistake. They should have kept to their creative format (adding DJs didn’t really improve things). And they wondered why they lost their market share. What do these consultants do for their $2000 per day fee? KISS is identical in format with Virgin Radio (old MIX 99.9) so there’s nothing new. If I could pry open my wallet, I’d seriously consider subscribing to XM. I like their Ethel station and several other formats. Somebody should just clone Ethel – with a minimum of commercials added to keep it free.

I totally agree with you about Jack when it first started. It was great with the amazing variety of music they played and the absence of DJs was refreshing. It lost it’s appeal when it turned into Q107 junior. If Jack does come back, hopefully it will be to it’s original format!! That would be truly innovative!!

Bring our 92.5 back with Carley and the gang…this new one SUCKS….the music sucks big time….lost me as a listener….anyone know if they have gone to a new radio station?….

What would Ted think!
I guess I’ll have to give up Radio.
Shame on you Rogers for playing the game!!!!
Monday, June 8, 2009 at 18:11 |
I just completed the KISS survey, everyone who wants Jack back should complete it! Probably won’t do any good, but it can’t hurt.
Monday, June 8, 2009 at 18:16 |
I can only repeat what others have said. I am so very disappointed in the loss of Jack. Where are Carly, Jeff and the others? Refuse to listen to Kim Mitchell on Q. Back to iPod until TO starts up an equivalent to JACK stn. There is no way KISS will be on my Presets. Not sure what to do with the #1 Preset. Q is # 2. Sad sad day.

I think this is all because of the new president. Some say he is a very practical man — practical to the bone. That is in the sense that he will rely on numbers like a computer; if there’s something that has an indicator “loss of money”, he’ll change it. This is not a bad thing, but it certainly is not the best.
It is obvious that bringing an NFL team for just a few games over to the Rogers Centre isn’t profitable at all. In fact, it’s been known for quite a while now that the arena brings no profit to Rogers at all. Nevertheless, Ted Rogers maintained the arena and he brought the NFL team over to Toronto for at least a few games a season. The latter is not because he was trying to make money, but because he sincerely loved the city and thought that it deserves an NFL team and a decent arena for baseball, american football and whatnot.

I was away for the weekend; on Monday morning I was shocked to hear Rap? I also thought it was a joke. They did make fun and pretended to have callers ask to play something they did not like. I thought this was just horsing around.
I had a personal experience of being REPLACED and lived in shock. I hope Jeff , Carly, Samantha, Andrew and the rest find a way to come back and show Rogers they made another big mistake. I had that chance personally in my career and loved every minute of it.
Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 13:20 |
I can’t believe it! How can you replace a rock music station with hip hop!!! Give me a break!! What a shocker! It really dosen’t make any sense to me. I’m going to miss all of the team, especially in the AM drive to work – what a letdown!

Like “Leave Well Enough Alone – Already” I can’t believe that they did this…. I couldn’t believe it but believe me… once you put your radio station on 92.5 you believe!!!! Hubby turned it on in the car the other day and I couldn’t take it!!! Had to change it immediately… Truly…. If you want a migrane, then I suggest you listen to the new format…. Please sign the petition and hope that Rogers will smarten up and bring it back! NOT LIKELY THOUGH!
How Sad!

I can’t believe it. So Rogers wants to target the teens? Don’t think Adults are important for their whole corporate model? I hate Rogers, from constant random cell phone billing(cancelled service) to not taking on TSN2 (forever), and now cancelling Jack. I say send them message to who really pays there bills and change cable and internet companies and rent your movies at Blockbuster. I’ve always hated Rogers. There is no way Jack had low lisitner ratings, everbody I know listened.

I am only 14 but I think this is stupid too! I was on my way home from somewhere with my mom and she turns on the radio. I was so surprised to hear “Let It Rock” playing. It’s a good song but shouldn’t it be on radio stations like Virgin Radio or z103.5? We already have stations for us teenagers! A majority of radio stations are meant for teens! I liked some of the music they played on Jack! But of course, in the end it all comes down to making money..

What a tragety! Actually I heard it first on am 680. I was driving and needed a traffic report in a hurry. There was an ad for the “new” KISS FM on 92.5.
“Wait a minute!” sez I. So I went and checked it out. What a huge disappointment!
We have three teenagers. We all prefered Jack FM in the car. No one likes the new KISS so now we listen to… sob… CHUM FM.
Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 0:09 |
Is’nt the definition of insanity trying the same thing over again and expecting different results?
Kiss 92.5 will get clobbered again and will fail. Same format, same repetetive songs and I am tired of Kid Cudi every hour. Virgin, Chum and Z103 are infinitely better and whoever at Rogers made the change made a stupid move.
RIP Jack and enjoy it while you can Kiss!

Not that it really matters – but the story above is so wrong! The one that goes on about how all the old KISS people were sent out for lunch, then JACK came in and cleared out their “lockers” and then sent them packing…
I was in that meeting… It was in the building, we were all told at the same time, and then we were all allowed to come down and get our stuff, say goodbye, and take our time… It sucked, and it was sad – but it wasn’t like the above story…
Also, nobody used the lockers…

Damn it! I was hoping JackFM had simply moved down the dial to a different setting!!! I used to listen to the radio all the time! But in the last few years it seems that all the reputable, decent radio stations have turned to pop and crap music! Even ChumFM is now playing so called hip hop and top 40s -NON STOP! I understand having a variety of songs for all tastes, but c’mon! Non stop top 40s!!! And then you move up the dial to Virgin 99.9 or whatever it’s now called. Three or four years ago they used to be good, great even!! With a mixture of pop, rock, alternative, folk, it was a great station to listen to. Then they brought in those idiotic dj’s – MadDog and Billie (who crashed with KissFM back in the 90’s btw), and ever since, the station is pure garbage. JackFM was my last resort – whenever I needed a break from the same old crap, I would tune in to Jack and listen to some awesome tunes!!! I guess it’s now back to cd’s and ipod lists – at least there are no commericals to listen to!

Wow, it looks like Toronto is a dance city, and not a rock city anymore.
Chum FM, then Mix99.9 (who played the odd rock song) now Virgin Radio, Jack FM gone, Z103, even 101.1 the River/Planet (used to play some new rock too) is not Z101! (another teenage hip hop station now).
Q107 was good when it was “Toronto’s best rock” now classic rock is fine but not heavy, I listen to 102.1 the Edge alot but they aren’t even heavy anymore, they used to play bands like Godsmack and Disturbed but no more. Only real rock station now unfortunately is 97.7 htzfm http://www.htzfm.com in St. Catharines and (if you can get the signal) 103.3 the Edge in Buffalo http://www.wedg.com – that radio station stole our Edge’s format! but they really are good, play all the real rock. (like the bands listed below)
so 102.1 the Edge, would it kill you guys to play Korn, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, Sevendust, Breaking Benjamin, Trapt, Mudvayne during the day? or Tool? (no I don’t just mean “The Pot or Schism”).
If you want to continue to call yourselves “The Edge” then act like it and show listeners why you should continue to be the Edge and carry that name. Jack is gone, lead the revvolution of new hard rock, not this soft Coldplay/Franz Ferdinand/Metric/K-os/The Stills/The Flatliners. That’s not rock, that’s soft music or pop, you’re a “rock” station guys, act like it, Jack is gone, maybe at this rate, hmm…..
